The EU Are Banning "Dodgy Boxes" And We're Freaking Out

The Android Box, or dodgy box, has become a popular device in recent years. You can watch films, TV and sport all from the comfort of your couch. Just when you thought you had it all it can be taken away from you as the EU may be bringing in a ban on "dodgy boxes".

Yesterday, the European Court of Justice said the devices, such as Android, can constitute an infringement of copyright. According to the Independent, a case concerning a Dutch retailer who was selling Android boxes, with pirated software, that would allow people to watch what they want without paying for the content brought the problem to light.

The judge discussed a gray area in the Irish and European law which means a crackdown may soon follow. The European Court said: “The sale of a multimedia player which enables films that are available illegally on the internet to be viewed easily and for free on a television screen could constitute an infringement of copyright".

Irish shops could be prosecuted in future if they sell Android boxes with software already on the box. The gray are of Irish law hasn't concerned itself with the boxes because boxes stream movies rather than download them. Movie companies don't agree. The ruling didn't mention Android boxes that are not ‘loaded’ with pirate software as illegal.

Sadly, all good things come to an end.
