Unpaid bar bills in the Dáil have been written off after supposed repeated attempts to get the bill dodgers to pay. The credit policy in the Dáil's bars and restaurants is being changed in light of this, making it so that TDs and Senators must pay their outstanding balances in Leinster House sooner rather than later.
Long-running bills that hadn't been paid have been written off as there was no "realistic prospect of recovery of the sums due". The Houses of the Oireachtas Commission annual report that stated that the outstanding balances were "very small" in comparison to the incomings of the bar and restaurant. It is unknown whether the culprits are former or current members of the Dáil.
Senators and TDs can avail of two restaurants, a coffee dock and two bars in Leinster House and never before has there been a limit to when they must pay their tab. Last year, the Irish Times revealed that €5,405 was owed to the Oireachtas visitors and members bar from TDs and Senators. Oireachtas staff attempted to recover the amount owed but as of March 2016, €4,000 euro had yet to be paid off.
