Meteor And Eir Are Solving Coverage Blackspots By Introducing Wi-Fi Calling

Do you dread heading back home on the weekends as you know you'll have pretty much zero phone coverage? Well, if you're with eir or Meteor this might be a thing of the past.

eir and Meteor are introducing Wi-Fi calling which will mean you can send and receive calls even when you have no signal. At the moment, you can only nab the service if you're a bill pay customer, and the network will deduct calls and texts from using the service as normal.

What's great about this is that you won't get roaming charges while abroad as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi – hooray! This means you can call Mammy while abroad and it'll cost the same as if you were in Ireland.

Something you should know, however, is that the service only works on these phones at the moment;

  • Apple iPhone SE, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus.
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, S7 and S7 Edge and S8 and S8 Plus

Customers don't even need any sort of extra app to use Wi-Fi calling once the settings are up to date. To use Wi-Fi calling all you have to do is turn on the Wi-Fi calling setting on your phone, make sure you've a Wi-Fi setting and call whoever you want.

For Android devices, you'll need to be updated to Android N, while on iPhones need to be updated to iOS 10.3 and with carrier bundle 28.3 – simples.
