There's Been A Huge Development For Making A Murderer's Steven Avery

Making A Murderer attracted international attention when it released on Netflix in 2015. In 2007, Stephen Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey were found guilty of the murder of Teresa Halbach and the true crime doc suggested they were framed. While Dassey's conviction was overturned earlier this year, Avery has remained in prison but has always maintained his innocence.

Now it looks like Avery's fight for freedom will continue for some time yet as his request for a new trial has been denied. His attorney, Kathleen Zellner filed a motion for a new trial in June, and accused Halbach's ex-boyfriend, Ryan Hillegas, of being guilty of the murder on the basis that he had been motivated by jealousy to kill. Zellener has shared posts on Twitter about having new evidence she believed would clear Avery of the murder if it were presented at trial. Just yesterday, she posted this tweet:

The presiding Judge ruled that the evidence was not sufficient enough for a new trial.

Following the court ruling, Zellner said she will appeal the decision: "We are filing an amended petition because we have additional test results and witness affidavits. The scientific testing is not completed. We remain optimistic that Mr. Avery's conviction will be vacated."
