A new research and training network that specialises in developing new technologies to support mental health services for young people was announced yesterday at UCD.
The network, named TEAM (Technology Enabled Mental Health for Young People), is being funded almost €4 million by the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions initiative, a grant specifically for interdisciplinary research groups.
Many studies find that young people suffering from mental health difficulties often don't have access to appropriate support. Studies show that almost half of mental disorders manifest by 14 years of age, and if left untreated can triple the likelihood of further difficulties later on in life.
The TEAM network's goal is to train researchers in more effective and affordable mental health techniques and develop more efficient services for young people. The network will also focus on the design and development of new technology for mental health services.
TEAM is a multidisciplinary network of designers, computer scientists, and mental health experts from five countries and will provide a training and research platform for 15 PhD students.
TEAM's foundation is built on four key themes; assessment, prevention, treatment, and policy. It aims to deliver new technology that can provide early and large stage assessment of mental health problems in young people.
