Here's An Update On The Luas Cross City And When It'll Be Ready

It feels like the Luas Cross City Works have been going on for eons. You've probably wondered more than once, when will the Luas be finished, so we have found all the key info to answer all your burning questions.

It might seem like ages since the Luas started, and you're right. Work has been ongoing since June 2013 - yep, 4 whole years next month. But thankfully, it's nearly over. Here's what you need to know:

1. There are 13 new stops

  • St Stephen's Green
  • Dawson Street
  • Trinity
  • Westmoreland Street
  • O'Connell Street GPO
  • O'Connell Street Upper
  • Parnell Street
  • Marlborough Street
  • Dominick Street
  • Broadstone DIT
  • Grangegorman
  • Phibsborough
  • Cabra
  • Broombridge

3. Next month, cables go live

In June 2017, electrical cables will go live and there'll be the first 'Gauge Run' - exciting. This is when a tram is taken down the full track for the first time.

4. Molly Malone is staying put

Statues that were moved for the Luas works like Lady Grattan and Thomas Moore will return to their original spots but Molly Malone is probably going to stay where she is outside St Andrew's Church.

5. It'll take 21 minutes to travel from Stephen's Green to Cabra

A hell of a lot shorter than walking the 6.6km.

6. The Cross City line is designed differently from the red and green lines

Although the Cross City Luas will be a double track, but will split into two single tracks to loop around the city centre at College Green.

The single track loop will run across Parnell Street, down Marlborough Street, across the bridge between Eden and Burgh Quays and south along Hawkins Street and into College Street, linking back up at College Green. Phew.

7. December is go time

The first passengers are set to board in December 2017, just in time for Christmas. Fingers crossed!
