Here's How To Get Your J1 Tax Back

Anyone who was lucky enough to go on a J1 last year will be happy to know you're actually owed money – woohoo. Here's how to get J1 tax back from last summer in the States.

It may seem like a lot of mumbly jumbly nonsense right now, but it's actually much easier than you might think. There are a few steps you need to follow in order to get it all done correctly and then you'll be swimming in some cold, hard cash. (sort of) Some people can claim as much as $800 back, so it's probably worth it to get it sorted as soon as possible.

Here are the few step you need to do before you get that beautiful cheque in the post.

1. Get your employer to send out the W2 form

This is the first step in getting your tax back. You need your employer to send you this at the beginning of the year. Your employer has until the 15th of February to send this to you so get on their case if they haven't contacted you yet. They can do this by post or by email whichever one you fancy.

2. Fill out the 1040NR-EZ (Non-Resident Aliens with No Dependents) Tax Form

This one can be found at the United States Embassy in your home country or on the Internet at www.irs.gov. Once you fill this bad boy out you send it off to: United States Internal Revenue Service Center Philadelphia, PA 19255 USA.

3. Request a pamphlet

When you request the 1040NR-EZ form, ask for the instructions pamphlet. To avoid any mistakes, follow the instructions carefully. You have to have all the paperwork done by or before the 15 April.

4. Go the state's website for State and Local Income tax

Go to the state you were working and living in's Department of Revenue website and download their State Income tax form. Some cities also require an Income tax form and you can find that on the website as well. Or else, you can email your employer and request these forms.

5. Use a service like Taxback.com

This can really make the whole process much easier as they'll guide you every step of the way. All you have to do is fill out a tax pack and the lads will keep you updated as they have a 24/7 live chat.

If in doubt, check out the company you went with's website where they'll give a summary on what you should be doing.
