11 Beauty Routine Changes You Need To Make In Your 20s

You can get away with many beauty faux pas in your teen years. But now you're in your twenties and dabbling your toes into the real world. Which means you need to start taking your beauty routine seriously too. There's just some things you can't get away with anymore.

1) Maintain A Consistent Skincare Routine

Removing your makeup with a wet wipe and moisturising every now and again just isn't going to cut it anymore. You need to get yourself a consistent skincare routine including a face wash, cleanser, toner and moisturiser! Everyone's skin is different, so it's important to shop around and find the perfect skin routine that works for you. Personally, I love Clinique. I'm a huge fan of their cleanser and their 3 Step programme, which is tailor made for your skin needs.

2) Use Eye Cream

Whether it's late night drinks or study sessions, our eyes can take a pounding with the lack of sleep that occurs in our twenties. Using an eye cream is not only important to avoid those dreaded wrinkles, but will also help with dark circles, puffiness and will make your eyes appear brighter and more awake (even if you're dying a slow death on the inside.) L'Oreal's Skin Perfection Awakening Eye Cream is a light enough formula for younger skin, and is also slightly tinted to cover up those dark circles.

3) Use A Serum

Many people seem to think that serums are only for women in their 30's and 40's, but serums are great for improving skin quality. You don't necessarily need to get an anti-ageing one, L'Oreal's Skin Perfection Advanced Correcting Serum is great for evening out your skin tone. Just like the eye cream, the Skin Perfection range is perfect for young skin. Lightly pat the formula into your skin and let to dry before applying your moisturiser.

4) Remove Your Makeup Thoroughly Every Night

Makeup wipes simply aren't to remove all the dirt and grime that's sitting on your skin. You need to thoroughly clean your skin before you go to bed because that's when your skin repairs itself. This goes for nights out too! There is no bigger beauty mistake than going to sleep with a full face of makeup. Garnier's Micellar water is super easy to use, cheap and removes everything!

5) Stop Tugging At Your Eyes!

Hands up, how many people painfully glide blunt eyeliner over their lids instead of just sharpening it? Yeah.. I thought so. The skin around your eyes is wafer thin and pulling it around in all different directions will do you know help when it comes to preventing wrinkles. Same goes for lip liners! Use a sharpener and save yourself the wrinkles.

6) Remove Products With Care

Speaking of tugging at your eyes, you need to stop scrubbing the mascara off your face! All those rough actions are doing your eyes and skin no justice. Try to gently remove your makeup in slow motions in the same direction. Never use the 'up and down' scrubbing like technique. Your skin is your biggest investment, treat it with care.

7) Start Scrubbing

You need to start using an exfoliating scrub twice a week - this goes for both face and body. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and reveals a brighter, healthier looking layer of skin. Exfoliating is also vital for maintaining an even skin tone. You know those annoying red marks that are left from spots? Scrubbing your face regularly is the only way to get rid of them. Apply scrubs gently in circular movements. Again, avoid the 'up and down' method. Scrubs don't have to be expensive, I swear by St. Ives' face scrubs!

8) Wear SPF Daily

"Even in Winter?" Yes, even in Winter! While the sun may not be 'out', the sun is still there doing it's thing and damaging your skin. Ask anyone in their 40's and they'll tell you their biggest beauty regret is not wearing an SPF regularly! There are so many moisturisers and foundations which have SPF built in, so no excuses.

9) Don't Neglect Your Neck and Hands

They say the easiest way to tell someone's age is to look at their neck or hands. So keep those babies moisturised.

10) Introduce Retinol Into Your Skincare

Whether it's your serum or moisturiser, experts say your twenties is the perfect time to introduce this 'fountain of youth' ingredient into your skincare routine. Derived from Vitamin A, it can reverse skin damages and even train your skin to be healthy again with it's cell communicating properties. (How cool?) In simple terms, this is every dermatologists dream and is advised for overall skin health. As a result, products containing retinol can be quite pricey. Here are some of the cheapest retinal products on the market!

11) Get More Beauty Sleep

You're not 16 anymore, you can't get 4 hours sleep and look fine the next day. Lack of sleep will show on your skin, so it's essential to make time for some well earned R&R. So ditch the late night Netflix binges and get an extra few hours sleep. Your skin will thank you for it!
