This DCU Student's Story Challenges Everything You Think You Know About Homelessness

Homelessness is a growing epidemic in Ireland – but too many of us have very distorted views on the 'type' of person whom it can effect.

As this DCU student shows, though, it really can happen to anyone.

This video was made by DCU's Media Production Society, and features Laura talking about her experience with homelessness.

She says:

"I think it's important for people to donate to the Peter McVerry Trust because of the huge amount of homeless people in Ireland, including young children and pregnant women.

"Having a home should be a basic right and donating to this charity can help everyday people receive the same rights as others! It's horrible to not have somewhere to call your own, and donating to this charity can help so many people and change their lives completely."

The video was made in conjunction with MPS's annual charity event, 'The DCU 24 Hour Broadcast'. The event itself involves students producing content for 24 hours, all for charity. Last year alone the event raised over €7,000 for the mental health charity, Jigsaw.

This year, the society hopes to do the same for the Peter McVerry Trust; a charity that assists families who've become homeless. Laura's story explains how integral the charity was for helping her and her family.

The broadcast will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of December with all donations going directly to the charity. You can donate on the night and can find more information on the DCU MPS Facebook page.
