I'm A Hater Too

Joseph Munnelly

Recently, an Interview with Mtv caught my attention. Ella Yelich-O’Connor, aka the New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde, spoke out about the state of pop culture berating her contemporaries as she scrutinised the likes of Justin Bieber for not providing "a real depiction of what it's like to be a young person.” Her hit single ‘Royals’ has grabbed a lot of attention and she has done so without any gimmicks or outrageous clichés. Recently she has sparked attention from the media from speaking out against the ridiculousness of hater culture – arguing that every opinion whether positive or negative concerning music is valid.

This is an annoyingly common trait in music to date, whereby fans can simply label a person a ‘hater’ dismissing alternative views as jealously. Music is objective and what may be utter sh*te to me could be the cause of constant violation of the replay button for another. After the seventeen year old singer was questioned about her views, she answered: "I think there's a funny culture in music that's only happened over the last 15 years, that if you have an opinion about something in music that isn't 100-percent good, you're a 'hater,' even if you have perfectly reasonable grounds for that critique".

People make comments about a movie or TV show all the time and Lorde has a point, why should we fear expressing a negative opinion related to music or any other art form for that matter – isn’t that the point?

Miley fans took to twitter to attack the seventeen year old singer, after she spoke out about Cyrus’ (... how should we put it politely) display at the VMAs. She was of course completely entitled to her view, as am I, as are you but ironically Miley fans sought revenge for what Lorde had said, throwing insults via social media which the singer-songwriter took with zest. After nabbing the top spot from ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer, Miley fans called her “eyes too far apart”. Lorde retweeted it and later in an interview replied: “they’re right”.

Lorde is one woman to watch as she continues to impress both audiences and critics alike. She is a breath of fresh air within the music scene and I’m with her on this one – I’m a hater too.
