Reminiscing On The Best Game Ever Made: Club Penguin

Club Penguin was where social media began for me. It was my first taste of online communications, a place where you could meet with your friends, have a chat, as well as play games; earn money; buy an igloo, and live in a virtual reality where everyone was a penguin.

Club Penguin came around in 2005, and quickly blew up. In 2007 it was bought by Disney. It may not be very vintage, but it’s definitely a classic of its time. It was an online game where you earned a living, styled your penguin, completed missions, ate pizza and made friends from all over the world.

You logged onto whatever server you wanted; walked around the town; the forest; the mines; try flip the iceberg (whether it was a myth or not); went snowboarding; became a spy; had a date in the pizza parlour; bought some crazy wigs; expanded your igloo; bought a pet puffle, or got banned for swearing.

People were obsessed, and many still are after Club Penguin came back into our lives recently. It was announced last year that the game's website is being shut down and being replaced by a mobile version. Many old flames of the game began freaking out on Twitter, and brought it back to life by creating memes that only Club Penguin fanatics would understand.

Last year the fact that there was a Donald Trump protest happening on the server had people fleeing back to the game.

The crazy thing is, people are still constantly talking about it. It was the beginning of our online future for many of us, before being allowed join Bebo. It seems every few seconds someone thinks and tweets about Club Penguin, according to the twitter search I did, and it has clearly made a huge effect on this generation’s life.

But don’t worry, the game is still here. They brought in Club Penguin: Rewritten with all the same features as before. Go reminisce on your child hood, and recreate your online life as a penguin!
