We never stop learning. Well at least we should never stop learning. While we can get away with not knowing how to do long division in algebra, there are a few must-knows in adult life.
Thankfully, I've made you a handy bucket list of things you should know how to do so you don't have to figure it all out yourself. See, at times the internet can be your friend.
You might read some of these and wonder "when am I going to need to use these skills?". To try and sound the least hypochondriac and paranoid, you just never know. Sure aren't we constantly being told the world is going to end! * pops on tin hat*.
Here are just some of the things you should know when you're in your 20s:
You should know how to start a fire without matches
Learn this technique before you end up on a deserted island.
You should learn how to drive
It won't just be for days when you're bored but it's a life skill you'll never know how you survived without.
You should know how to change a tire
'Cause it'll definitely go flat at the most inconvenient of times.
You should learn basic survival skills
Starting a fire, treating a burn, foresting for food, hunting, keeping warm, finding water and tieing an effective knot in a rope is just many of the basic skills you should know. *forages in tin hat*.
You should know how to ask for help
There's nothing worse than being with somebody who won't ask for directions. It's infuriating. It's idiotic. It's very simple - Just ask. Obviously asking for directions is a simple form of help but it starts off with the small things.
You should know how to make at least 5 different recipes for dinner
You can't always eat out so it's good to have a balance. If you don't know how to cook Google helpful videos, take out cooking books from the library, go to a class or ask a friend to help. It'll save you a lot of money down the line.
You should learn how to break down a door
Obviously, we're not talking about a "Here's Johnny" moment where you turn psycho killer. It's a life skill when you're stuck in a bathroom (stop with The Shining references) or locked outside. You just never know. Learning to pick a lock would be a good addition to this 'possible' scenario.
You should know how to control your emotions
It's okay to lose control of your emotions but if you're finding yourself losing it when your bus doesn't arrive on time you might want to talk to somebody.
You should know how to make a complaint
Irish people are awful at complaining: " I don't want to make a fuss!" is just one of the many things we say to avoid making a scene. Make a fuss or choke on that overcooked steak that is going to break your teeth. Goddamnit.
You should learn self-defense
If you've ever watched a horror movie or read the news lately then you know why this is necessary.
You should learn how to swim
'Cause you don't want to drown. If you never learn how to swim remember this: If you fall into any deep mass of water don't panic. Your body will sink faster. Allow yourself to float until you reach the top.
You should know how to use a map
You won't always have your smart phone handy (I know, I sound like a 90-year-old).
You should know how to cook an egg
There's many ways to cook an egg. I'm not here to tell you them all.
You should know when to listen
It's not always easy, especially if you're a chatterbox, but it's a life skill that will benefit you. Maybe your teacher was right when they always moved you away from your best friend.
You should know how to back up your data
If we had a euro for every time we lost all information we'd be rich. Do yourself a favour and send yourself a copy in email. Dropbox is a great place to leave all your photos. Google Docs is more reliable than your hard drive.
You should know how to do First Aid
Take up a course and learn the basics. You won't ever regret it.
You should always carry antihistamines on you
You never know what you'll be allergic to or how your body will climatise to new weather conditions.
We have a feeling we'll be making a second list.
