Standards in Irish among primary school children have notably deteriorated in recent years, according to the latest Chief's Inspector Report.
The Department of Education report, which was published this morning, found that standards in Irish are poorer than those in English and Maths, citing "a significant cohort of children are not making appropriate progress in Irish."
According to the report, the quality of teaching and learning was "less than satisfactory" in 28% of the schools evaluated, while 12% were scored in the "very good" category.
The report found that the quality of teaching was generally of a high standard, across the almost 2000 primary schools that were visited by Inspectors. Teachers’ classroom management skills were satisfactory in almost all lessons observed.
However, the report noted that the quality of teaching approaches used and the learning experiences provided for students were"less positive."
Inspectors reported that significant changes were required in regards to learning experiences provided to pupils if improvement in outcomes in Irish was to be achieved.
The Department of Education report covers the period from January 2013 to July 2016.
